I sit here at work and I think to myself – for every second our lives we spend doing the thing that we do not love, or for every second that we spend with the one that we do not love, we are wasting our time here. I think there are so many things that are put into place that are designed for our misery or for our bondage. It was because of the sins of the ones that came before us that we are to toil the land for food. They toiled the land by killing the animals or working the farms and we toil in a much more modern and different way, yet the curse remains the same. We must toil.
Chicago was named the fourth most depressed city in the world not long ago by a recent study. That really suprised most, yet it came of no surprise to me at all. In a city with much beauty and a diverse array of individuals there are two things wrong. First, its cold almost nine out of the twelve months of the year. Second even though the businesses here are plentiful and the unemployment rate (except for the mortgage industry) is down, we are spending our lives doing something that does not fit our destiny nor does it make us happy. In short, people are generally miserable and feel stuck. You can see evidence of this on the trains and buses if you pay attention. They look dazed, robotic, and lifeless.
Well, I cannot conform to that. Its such an easy thing to do. In a land where if you dont work, you dont eat and nothing comes to you in an easy fashion, doing what you hate and settling for whatever comes your way is the easiest path – the one with the least resistance.
I cannot be convinced that life has to be this way. There are certainly times when you have to do what you dont want to do to get what you want. But it does not have to be that way always.
Could it all be so simple as to we truly determine our own destiny and through choices we have made our destiny is determined?
